Netbooks continue to grow in popularity and new machines seem to be launched almost daily. First of all the Asus Eee PC S101 looks like a real contender for the title "Netbook King". It moves away from the netbooks "low cost device" tag but it is a fantastic portable.

Fujitsu Siemens has announced the Amilo UI 3250 Netbook but first impressions aren't that favorable compared with the competition.

Next comes an update to the MSI Wind U100 which can now be specified with an 802.11n wireless LAN and 160gb hard drive. It also has a 6 cell battery giving 4 hours plus operating time. The price has also been reduced.

Shortly arriving is the Packard Bell Dot an 8.9 inch netbook with windows xp. No 3G support on the initial machine though.

Finally we have another 8.9 incher with the Toshiba NB100. We'll add more details and reviews as more inforamtion emerges.

HP Mini 1000 Netbook Review

The Netbook is the latest incarnation in the continuing miniaturization of the laptop. It reflects the increased demand for truly portable computing devices which enables users to perform many basic functions e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, web surfing and email. The devices typically measure 10x5 inches and weigh in at 1 to 1.5 kg. The best also offer battery life in excess of 5 hours between recharges.

HP recently introduced the HP Mini 1000 which was a great netbook offering. It will shortly be enchanced with what has been termed MIE. HP's new Mobile Internet Experience (MIE) offers the online content and applications you want with just one click. Using the intuitive desktop, you can access email, internet, pictures, video, and music faster and more easily than ever. It features:

Dashboard-style interface lets you personalize your Mini by adding favorite websites
Applications automatically launch when you power on – and web pages stay live and dynamically update while connected
Work and play comfortably on the near-full-size keyboard (92% of full size)
Integrated HP MediaStyle provides quick access to photos, music & entertainment
Chat face to face with the built-in HP Mini Webcam
Snap an HP Mini Mobile Drive into the recessed port to add storage*
Optional; Available with Solid State Drive (SSD) configurations only.

It is powered by Linux, the Intel Atom processor and measures just 10x5 inches with a keyboard that is 92% normal size. 1gb of RAM which can be expanded and a 60gb hard drive. There's also an SD slot, VGA webcam, 802.11b/g, optional Bluetooth, Ethernet and dual USB plugs.

Where things get extra interesting is in choice of OS. You can go the standard XP route, or for $20 less you can go for HP's brand new Ubuntu-based Linux "experience," MIE, which reminds us not just a little of HP's TouchSmart interface. The XP version is available today starting at $399, with a 10.2-inch version costing more. The MIE version will land in January for a mere $379.

We think we've found the first netbook we'd score at 90%. A superb second generation netbook from HP.

2009 - Dell Studio 17

The Dell Studio range is designed to sit in between the value Inspiron series and the top of the range budget busting XPS.

This is a big laptop let's make no mistake. We really can't imagine lugging it around all day so it is best viewed as a desktop replacement, a task, which is quite capable of fulfilling.

As with all Dell's you get what you pay for and there is an extensive range of potential upgrades. Standard kit includes Pentium Dual Core 1.7ghz processor, 320gb hard drive and 2gb RAM.

What we like

Stylish design - Dell finally gets it.
Runs very cool.
Competent performer for the price.

What we wish were better

Mind boggling array of options and extras
Battery life just over two hours

Conclusion

The Dell Studio 17 is a good all-round machine capable of replacing your desktop. Whilst it is easy to relocate you certainly wouldn't want to carry it around with you all day. Nonetheless great value and well worthy of consideration especially, if you couldn't be seen with an Inspiron! Consider a potential purchase against the Asus M70

2009 Asus X71SR

The Asus X71R is another 17 inch screened laptop which functions as a potential desktop replacement.

It is equipped with a 2ghz Core Duo Intel processor, 3gb of RAM and a 250gb hard dirve. It weighs in at a hefty 3.7kg and battery life, for a machine of this size, is an excellent 180 mins.

It has a 17 inch TFT monitor that produces sharp even images in rich colors and runs at an impressive resolution of 1440x900 pixels.

We liked

For a fairly low cost laptop the graphic card offers sufficient power for basic gaming.
Great for watching DVDs
Good sound from the fitted speakers

We didn't like

The keyboard which isn't as good as some competitors

Conclusion

An excellent 17inch laptop with the capability to handle media and graphics work competently. Hardly bleeding edge but certainly good enough for most consumer requirements. We'd score it at 80%.

2009 Apple Mackbook Pro

Okay so it's not cheap but has Apple pulled it off yet again with the release of the 2009 MacBook Pro? Well how does an aluminum case, 14.4 inch screen and battery life of 251 mins sound for starters?

Not enough? Well how about full gesture support? Does that get you more excited? The giant touchpad allows you to make specific gestures with your fingers to which the machine responds. For example, you can rotate an image by circling your finger. Pretty cool eh?

Strong graphics performance, a 320gb hard drive, 4gb Ram, DVD re-writer. As you'd expect for the price the spec is high but there is no doubt it's a top performer, very good looking and highly desirable. Expensive but brill - we'd rate it at 85%.

Dell have finally launched their much anticipated netbook finally giving them a presence in the flourishing netbook market. It's a stylish machine and UK readers can pick one up for free from Vodafone with an appropriate contract.

The Inspiron Mini 9 is available in two colors - Obsidian Black or Alpine White. It is configured with Windows XP Home with an alternative Ubuntu OS coming soon.

Powered by the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is claimed to offer a battery life of up to four hours. The netbook weighs under 2.3 pounds and measures 1.25 by 9.13 by 6.77 inches.
